Sometimes I wonder if just paying for an expansion will get CCP enough money to release more complete things sooner and if that wouldn't be preferable.

I like this argument~!
Say CCP gets a $5,000,000 monthly income Their monthly expenses for maintenance are say $250,000 Their devs and other personnel cost $3,000,000 They spend $500,000 on advertizements
Their customers pay them $5,000,000 a month.
Is adding content every now and then free? No of course not, it's all being payed for by your subscriptions. As Schalac said, CCP's business model is getting extra income by having people have more accounts by only allowing one character to train. That way they gerenerate extra income they wouldn't get if every account had to pay additional fees for each expansion.

Originally by: W1rlW1nd oh hey maybe i missed it, did ccp just charge everyone an extra $30 PER ACCOUNT in addition to the subscription for the privilege of continuing to play like certain other MMO... oh they didn't? then the expansion was free. any profit they make from regular subs is called >PROFIT< duh! that is why businesses exist.
Say all you want but you can't deny the devs who make the expansions are payed by the money we pay CCP with our subscriptions.

Originally by: Altus Nubius Most of the disagreement seems to be about what "free" means. If something costs nothing at the point of use -- its marginal cost is zero -- it is free.
Or do the space economists disagree?
I totally agree.
Originally by: Saving Face LoTRO is a horrible example, if you create a new f2p LoTRO account you'll find that you'll have almost no quests you can do without buying quest packs for the individual regions. F2P LoTRO is quite expensive for players and you'll be out >$100 before you can actually see all of the game, and some more if you want all the inventory space that subscription customers used to have and all that other stuff. You have to play for a year or so before LoTRO is cheaper than EvE.
Lotro was horrible, the character creator was such a let down that I didn't even get beyond that! But well if you like it, why not .. and playing for a year, who plays EVE for less than a year? You're hardly capable of decently fitting a few nice ships.

The point was that after that year of LoTRO, there'll be another expansion that you'll have to pay for. Depending on their schedule, it could well be that LoTRO never actually becomes cheaper than Eve if you want to have access to all content.
Well I don't know much about that game so I can't really argue. What about guildwars (I played that for a long time) or DDO?
